This specific combination serves as a standard starting point for dual therapy, balancing strong efficacy with a favorable safety profile: Glimepiride (1mg): A sulfonylurea at a standard low starting dose. It lowers blood glucose by directly stimulating the beta cells of the pancreas to release more insulin. Metformin SR (500mg): A biguanide in a Sustained Release formulation. It tackles the root cause of insulin resistance by reducing hepatic (liver) glucose production and enhancing glucose uptake in muscles. The SR format releases the drug gradually, which significantly reduces common gastrointestinal side effects.
